Case in Point - The Importance of Food and Water Storage

A long while ago I made a case for food and water storage in the home. Now I'd like to show you just why it is so important. Right now there is a severe winter storm warning for the Maryland/D.C. and surrounding areas. We are expecting 18-24 inches of snow within a 24 hour period. It doesn't snow that much very often, in fact it doesn't snow very often at all here in a typical winter so the state is ill equipped to handle such amounts. When we get snow of that magnitude, most people are snowed in for a few days. It's no wonder residents want to stock up on food and water and toiletries right now. Take a look at the following pictures:

First sign of trouble. No unused baskets outside or in the parking lot or in the store.

Toilet paper is dwindling.

All the cheap eggs are gone.

Water nearly gone.

Same with chicken.

Heaven forbid we have no donuts to eat during the storm!

Oh and bananas!

All checkout lanes are open to no avail...

Just imagine what the scene will be like for a true and unexpected disaster. Instead of people waiting impateiently in line for their groceries, panicked citizens will be looting the store running out with all they can carry, feeling justified in doing so since it's for the good of their loved ones. Even if looting doesn't happen, what are the chances you're going to be able to get everything you need at the store? Will you even be able to make it out to the store in the event of a disaster? Don't wait for disaster to strike. Start stocking up on food, water and other household necessities NOW.

Veggie Tales Saint Nicholas - A Review

The Family Review Network recently sent me the DVD - Veggie Tales Saint Nicholas, A Story of Joyful Giving, to keep and then review.

Veggie Tales really can't seem to do anything wrong. Every DVD I've seen I have loved and this one is no exception. It's a really cute story about the joy of giving to others and is very loosely based on the history of Saint Nicholas'. There were parts of this movie where I laughed out loud with my kids. Veggie Tales is always full of great, tasteful jokes that parents can also enjoy. This is truly a wonderful, family DVD!

I'm late posting this so you'll have to hurry if you want in. This deal ends tomorrow.

Get a $5 reward coupon when you spend $25 on select products at Safeway. Products include:

* Gold Medal 5 lb. all-purpose and unbleached flour at 2 for $3

I have not seen flour so cheap since, well, I can't even remember when I ever saw it at $1.50 for a 5 lb. bag!

I hit Safeway tonight and bought 15 bags (30 lbs.) of brown sugar for $25.35, received my $5.00 off coupon and used it in a second transaction.

Second transaction was 18 bags (90 lbs.) of Gold Medal flour for $22.00 after $5.00 off coupon.

Can't have enough flour or sugar in food storage I think. Plus, now I'm stocked up for holiday baking. Yay!

Taking a Break

Some of you may have noticed that I haven't posted for over a week. That's a new record, and one that I'm afraid will be broken.

I've got so much going on in my life right now I'm having to set some things on the backburner and this blog will be one of those things. I will leave it active and may post from time to time, but for those of you looking for weekly store/coupon matchups I simply don't have the time to post them regularly anymore. I have some other wonderful blogs listed in my sidebar that you can find store/coupon matchups on. Weekly giveaways will also be discontinued for the time being.

I truly appreciate those of you who have been regular readers and commenters and will definitely miss being active in the blogging community. I've been blogging somewhere or another for over 2 years now, but I'm realizing that there are more important things I need to get in order right now.

Thanks so much and happy deal seeking to you!

Zhu Zhu Pets Review

Here's a little hint: If you're a blogger and you want to get in on some freebie action, you should really join a product review network.

The folks at Mom Central recently sent me a hot new toy to keep and review. In fact, they sent me a whole party pack of Zhu Zhu Hamsters and accessories and asked me to invite some friends over for some playtime fun. In return for hosting a Zhu Zhu pet party and blogging about it, I got to keep a zhu zhu pet and the entire Hamster Habitrail (a $100 value) free:

As you can see, the pieces of the habitrail are sold separately so you can collect just the ones you want. The little hamsters are battery operated and roll around their habitat on wheels and my goodness, are they cute!! They have sensors that sense where they are going, so if they get onto the hamster wheel they make squeaky wheel sounds while they "run". They also make doorbell ringing sounds as they enter other parts of the habitrail and snoozing sounds when they go to sleep. They are soft and cuddly and really adorable.

The habitrail is fairly easy to figure out how to put together if you read the directions carefully, but it's not lock tight. A child leaning on the slide for instance can break the slide apart at the join but it's simple to put back into place. I will say that I was very pleased with the overall make of the habitrail parts, EXCEPT for the car garage. It was not so easy to put the top on the garage and even after successfully doing so it would just pop off at random. It's a piece that I wouldn't recommend buying unless they fix that design flaw. But the car that comes with it is awful cute and the hamsters will "drive" around in it on any hard surface.

In fact, you can place the hamsters down by themselves on any hard surface. If they run into walls they have a sensor on their nose and will course correct or back up. They can go over the carpet too, though very slowly and awfully life like. If you're squeamish about mice, you won't like the jolty movement they make on your carpet. Haha!

So what did my guests think about these adorable little pet alternatives. Let's find out:

Obviously the kids were fans and loved the little hamsters and the moms thought they were pretty cool too! Especially those who were not fond of the idea of having a real pet. Zhu Zhu pets is a no sneezing, wheezing or changing hamster bedding alternative. Mom Central was also awesome enough to send extra hamsters for each guest to take home.

Each hamster runs around $8.00 at Walmart, so maybe a little more expensive elsewhere. Definitely not an out of price range for a Christmas gift. Very cute, very fun! I think these pets are great!
